PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
For as long
as I can remember, the Jersey Late Greats has been a Club for people who enjoy
driving their cars. Yes, we have a handful of members with high point show cars
that don’t drive those cars very often. However most members are comfortable
taking the Chevy out for a spin when the weather is nice. Some of our members
even drive their Chevy’s everyday.
It seems
appropriate that our club organize an event were the participants DRIVE their
cars. This year’s Jersey Late Greats Road Rally is just that event! Tell your
friends, co-workers, and neighbors about this year’s Jersey Late Greats Road
Rally. You don’t have to register an older car to compete in the event. The
Road Rally is open to anyone and everyone with a valid Drivers License.
Attached
to this month’s newsletter is the flyer for the 2006 Jersey Late Greats Road
Rally. A registration form is printed at the bottom of the flyer. If you know
someone you think may be interested, please hand them a flyer. If you have a
bulletin board at work, post a flyer. Or if you are going to a Cruise Night
or Car Show, bring some flyers with you so you can hand them out. Let’s see
if we can get he word out as soon as possible for this event and get the pre-registration
forms in early.
Please note
that completed registration forms are to be sent to Road Rally Chairman Tom
Merring. If someone fills out a form and pays you on the spot, please contact
Tom and arrange to get him the money and the form.
Finally,
mark Sunday October 29th on your calendars. We will need your help hosting this
year’s Road Rally. Let Tom Merring know if you are able to help. Call or email
Tom.
Our June
meeting was held at John & Dawn Dennery’s. It never fails, whenever the
club meets at the Dennery’s, their back yard becomes a huge parking lot full
of great cars. Thanks go out to John & Dawn for hosting another fantastic
get together at their home last month.
Despite a
bleak weather forecast, a few dedicated members ventured down to Vineland, NJ
for the Delsea Drive In Cruise. Actually, Saturday afternoon was beautiful and
everyone enjoyed a refreshing dip in the hotels huge pool. That evening, we
had a nice dinner at a local steak house, and then the group headed to the Drive
In Movies. Soon after arriving, the weather took a turn for the worst and it
started to rain. Actually it poured.
Steve Calandra
made the best of a bad situation by hanging plastic bags and some towels in
the front windows of his Corvan. Steve was able to keep the windshield clear
by allowing the fresh air in and keeping the water out. After the movie, we
had a real surprise when we drove back to the hotel. It had rained so hard that
the hotel parking lot was under water. Jim Thackray and his Dad Lou didn’t seem
to mind, and just drove right in. I wish I had my camera. Jim’s white 64 SS
with the dual antennas on the rear quarters looked like a deep sea fishing boat
cruising through the parking lot. Way to go Captain Jim!
The following
day the rain had cleared and several of us headed over to Wheaton Village. Wheaton
Village is located in Millville and about 15 minutes from our hotel. Wheaton
Village is a tribute to the W.H. Wheaton Company that manufactured glass and
glass products. One of the furnaces is still in operation, and used for tours
and glass blowing demonstrations. There are a number of exhibits, tours and
demonstrations to see from glass blowing to pottery, to wood carving. What a
neat and interesting place!
Let’s take
a look at what is coming up for the Jersey Late Greats. The International Late
Great Chevy Convention is being held in Minneapolis Minnesota August 6 – 9.
Our next Summertime Picnic Meeting will be held at Leigh and Maureen Humphrey’s
in Carney’s Point on Saturday August 19. Be sure to call Leigh or Maureen and
let them know if you are planning to attend. The Woodward Avenue Cruise is August
18 and 19 in Detroit Michigan. Last but not least, the New Jersey Speed Skiff
and Garvey Boat Races are Sunday August 27 at 10:00 AM at the Barnegat Docks,
Barnegat New Jersey.
This month
looks like an action packed month! Keep those Chevy’s rollin’ and I hope to
see you at some of the events coming up this month
Enjoy the
Ride,
JwLucas
