PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

We had a petty good turn out for the June meeting. Good weather, great food, and the best of friends. Thanks go out to Jim and Claudia for their hospitality.

We had a very kool surprise at the June meeting. Al Bernotas showed up driving his 1963 “Power Tour” Chevy station wagon. That’s right! Al got the ol’ wagon fixed up and drove to Florida for the start of the tour. Written down the side of Al’s wagon read “Drive-Em Don’t Hide-Em”. Al and his long time friend Charlie Delfas continued with the tour back up the East Coast and ended at Englishtown, NJ Raceway Park. Al’s co-pilot Charlie Delfas joined us at Jim and Claudia’s. Al’s son, Brian also ran the Power Tour with his Chevy Pick Up. Way to Drive-Em Al !!!

During the meeting, Tony Kopke talked about the New Jersey Speed Garveys and Speed Skiffs. In addition to being a member of the Jersey Late Greats, Tony is also a member of the New Jersey Speed Skiff Association. It was interesting to hear the history of how these relatively small boats with high horsepower engines came to be. Tony had some photos to share. These boats are like high powered Hot Rods, only instead of pulling the front wheels off the pavement, they pull the bow of the boat out of the water. Several pictures showed boats flying though the air with only the prop in the water.

Several years ago the Jersey Late Greats visited a New Jersey Speed Skiff event. I wasn’t a member of the club at the time, however I heard it was interesting for our members to check out the boats. And the New Jersey Speed Skiff guys found it equally interesting to check out our cars. We have a date marked on the club calendar to do it again this year. If you are interested in checking these boats out, mark your calendars for Sunday August 27. The Boat Races will be held at Barnegat Docks and begin at 12:00 noon. Additional details on this event will be provided in next month’s news letter. Thank you Tony Kopke, for sharing a piece of New Jersey history with club.

Speaking of the Club Calendar, the Delsea Drive In Cruise is Saturday July 22. The Delsea Drive In is located at 2203 South Delsea Drive, Vineland, NJ (1/2 mile north of Sherman Avenue, RT 552). If you haven’t done so already, give Lou DiPietro or Diane Wagner a call and let them know if you are planning to attend.

I look forward to seeing you at John and Dawn’s for the July meeting. Make sure to give them a call and let them know you are coming.

Enjoy the Ride,
JwLucas
