The Jersey Late Greats kicked off our summer time event
on May17th with the Multi-Club Picnic. We welcomed our guest the New Jersey
Corvair Club and the Central New Jersey Corvette Car Club as we started
the grill and set up for our feast for the day. Another pleasant surprise
was when Tony and Sue Luce showed up with a delicious desert in hand! This
was our first summer time event without a club meeting and it seems that
no one missed it at all.
Al Bernotas fired up the grill with his blends of wood and coal. Lou DiPietro
helped Al in the cooking of the burgers and dogs. It seems the two of them
have become the top chef of the club. I’m always asked the question, Is
Al and Lou cooking? So again, Thanks guys for the great job on the grill!
Everyone mingled and talked cars all day. The children enjoyed climbing
the slide and just playing together for the day. The food was plentiful
and delicious. Jan and Sammy Lucas could not make this year’s event but
Jan sent her taco salad anyway with John which is always a hit and enjoyed
by all. Thanks Jan! I want to thank everyone who made and brought food.
Steve Calandra set up his sound system and delighted us with sounds of the
50’s 60’s and 70’s through out the day with the help of his sister-in-law.
Once again Verne hosted his car games! He received great door prizes from
Highstown Advantage Auto for this event. Teams gathered together to drive
their classic cars with a bag over their head and some even let their better
half guide them in one of the games. Later on, Verne tallied up the scores
and presented the winners with a prize. Al Bernotas walked around and sold
50/50‘s. Later on when the raffle was pulled, there was a moment of silence
as I checked my ticket. No, it wasn’t mine and still, silence. I than remembered
when Tony and Sue left, Tony gave me his tickets and asked if he won, please
donate his winnings back to the club. I pulled the second set of tickets
out of my left pocket and my eyes went right to a middle ticket with the
winning number on it. Thank You Tony and Sue for your generosity!
That morning before the clubs picnic, the board met at Jim Brussel’s home
We held a brief meeting about a club 12-month calendar for 2009. Verne held
the meeting and laid out all the financial information to produce 500 calendars.
We came to the conclusion we need more information to take on this financial
responsibility... We really need to think this one out completely and look
more into the financial end of it. At this time we may be looking at 2010.
On June 14th we will be meeting at my house in Carneys Point New Jersey.
Please make plans today to join Leigh and I. We are planning a demonstration
of a classic flame layout and paint by Egon’s Body Shop located two doors
from us. He is working on a 1929 Ford two-door coupe right now that will
have a mild flame job and we are hoping that we can have this car on display
at our event. Egon will show his talents of layout flames, painting and
pinstripes then answer any of our questions. Also another good reason to
come is to check out Leigh’s new garage!
