March 2008
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Spring is near and its time to get off the couch and dust
off those Late Greats, inspect them for missing parts or maybe that new
old part you’ve been thinking of. Well, get ready guys; it’s junkyard time
again! So get your toolbox packed up for our Annual Junk Run, March the
14th and 15th. We have another new yard to be explored this year, and I
would like to thank Mike Berry and Lou DiPietro for scouting Pennsylvania
and for finding this new yard. The owner of this yard is like most, a little
iffy and we may or may not get parts out of the yard. We do have a back
up plan to go to Angler’s Yard if this one fails.
Please plan to attend the meeting in April. We will be voting to reduce
the dues to $25.00. I believe this is a positive change for the club and
we are going forward once again. We have gained a couple of new members
and inquiries due to the article that was published in Chevy Classics magazine
mentioning our Documentation Service. The article has increased the interest
in the Documentation Service.
The Picnic date has been confirmed for May the 17th. The flyers have been
approved and printed and handed out already. Dawn Dennery took on the task
and printed up 200 flyers. Nice job Dawn! No need to think twice about coming
out to this event, you’ll have a good time. It’s not just the good burgers,
the seasoned chef’s grill or the home made salads the ladies create, but
it’s the orchestrated car games by Frantz that gets the adrenaline going.
“The woo and go!” How about wearing a bag on your head and driving your
late great? And to think there are prizes given out for that? How about
the nice field for a game of softball or valley ball or a little frisbee
throwing. So gather up the family and come on out for the day!
The place to be on Saturday the 23rd of February was the Annual Banquet
Luncheon at Adelphia Restaurant in Deptford NJ. We started out by being
welcomed at the door presented with a door prize ticket for ladies and another
for the gents. We each received a favor of a chocolate bar wrapped in a
special wrapper made by Dawn Dennery. The wrappers were printed by Dawn
designed with a collage of pictures featuring active club members at different
events wrapped with a golden elastic string tied into a bow. What a nice
touch! As you came into the room you couldn’t help but notice the handsomely
decorated tables adorned with John Dennerys collection of minted Late Great
models over beveled mirrors. Perfect for the occasion. A power point presentation
done by Dawn and another by Leigh played throughout the afternoon. The dinner
was delicious with lots to eat. Finishing with a scrumptious cake decorated
especially for the club by Jan Lucas. I heard a lot of people wanted to
take cake home. They wished for it the next day. It was the best one yet.
Then again, every thing Jan makes is better than the last. Thank you Jan.
What a delightful surprise it was when Kent and Rosemary Weinstein walked
through the door! You two completed the day! Charter member Robert Wheaton
joined us and new member Mike Patch and his five-year-old daughter Julia
from Maryland. The softer music played through dinner and picked up speed
later for some dancing. Steve Calandra is our club DJ and always provides
us with all the hits from the 50’s and 60’s. He showed us more talent he
had hidden by singing a song written for him. Too funny Steve!
Former President John Lucas presented the board member awards first. Then
John and I presented Mike Berry with a plaque for being newsletter editor
for a little more than eleven years. Mike has done this job very well. The
Attendance Award was presented to Jim Thackeray. I presented an appreciation
award to John Lucas for his three years of dedicated service as President
for 2005-2007. Finally the Member of the Year Award was presented to Jim
Brussel. This is a prestige’s award. Each year the club recognizes one Member
for his or her outstanding contributions to the organization. Congratulations
to Jim.
At last, the Dennery awards that is the highlight of the day! Every year
the brilliant and artfully mind of John Dennery comes up with the most outrageous
gag awards that one could ever imagine. Mike Berry received a magnetic gas
cap glove so he’ll never be able to leave his gas cap again while filling
up at pump. I received 200 screws (in a box) and I’m leaving it at that!
Again, Thank you to John and Dawn for putting it all together, and everyone
else who had a part in it.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the March meeting. Coffee and
refreshments will be served.
