November 2007
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Our October meeting was held at Tom & Lisa Merring’s home
(and Garage) in Hampton, New Jersey. Hampton is located in Scenic Warren County,
which provided a fantastic array of fall colors for our drive to the pumpkin
patch after the meeting. Thank you to Tom and Lisa for being such great host’s.
The Halloween theme, pumpkins, and snacks provided a very nice setting for the
club.
Members present at the meeting enjoyed a rare opportunity
of seeing TWO Black elCamino’s side by side. Tom’s stunning 60, and Bob McConnell
drove his beautiful 59. Both Black and both Beautiful. What a sight. ??
During the meeting we reviewed the results of the Jersey Late
Greats 2007 Road Rally. It was agreed that the Road Rally’s are getting better
each year. As we learn from the previous year the rally committee can make adjustments
and fine-tune the rally each year.
On the plus side: All participants commented on what a good
time they had. The route was well thought out and the directions and info. kits
were great. The flyers looked great. The club did an excellent job of rounding
up door prizes and everyone got something at the end of the rally. The club
made a few dollars. The weather couldn’t have been better. The pastries were
tasty. And our Members working the rally all had a good time.
The only aspect of the road rally that could use some help
was the number of participants. The members agreed the rally participation is
growing each year, and that’s good, however the club needs to figure out ways
to increase the participation.
The members present voted to do the rally again next year.
It was discussed that it would best if it were held in Central Jersey again
to build some momentum with pre-registrations. We can utilize the list of participants
from this year and mail them registration flyers for next year. Everyone present
thought it would be great if Verne would lead the Rally Committee again year.
We should begin putting the wheels in motion for next year’s road rally soon. After
talking about the rally, we focused on coming up with some new ideas for improving
the club for next year. One idea that seemed interesting was to reduce the number
of meetings per year. The improvement for the club would be that fewer weekends
during the summer would be taken up by club activities. The idea would be to
continue having monthly events but instead of having a meeting every month,
we would try and schedule one club activity per month. Two ideas for meetings
came up during our discussion. The first was to schedule meeting during the
winter months at Bordentown Community Center. The club would do all the planning
for the year at the Bordentown meetings. The second idea was to schedule quarterly
meetings. In either case the newsletter would remain a monthly publication.
Again the benefit would be to prevent having to many club activities during
a given month.
This idea represents a major change in the way the club functions,
and not something that just gets changed without really thinking it through.
It was agreed the ideas would be publicized in the newsletter, and further discussion
would take place after members had some time to think about it. If you have
some opinions about changing the meeting schedule, please plan to attend our
next meeting in Bordentown. We want to hear what you think, and see if this
makes sense for the club.
The October meeting is the time of the year that we start
looking for nominations for next year’s club officers. Nominations at the October
meeting include the following:
President: Maureen Humphrey’s
Vice President: Jim Thackeray
Treasurer: Verne Frantz
Secretary: Lou DePietro
Sergeant at Arms: Al Bernotas
The November meeting at Bordentown Community Center will be
the last month for nominations. If you are interested in becoming a club officer,
or know of someone in the club that you would like to see helping run the show,
please be sure to attend the November meeting, and get your nominations in.
Mike Berry will be heading up the nomination committee again this year.
Enjoy the Ride,
JwLucas
