PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Remember the song “I don’t want to say goodbye to the summer”?
That’s how I’ve been feeling these days, it has gone by way to fast for me.
But then again when I look around me I can’t deny how beautiful autumn can be.
On September 20th and 21st, some of our members enjoyed the weekend in the Leigonier,
PA area for the 12th annual Lincoln Highway Road Rally sponsored by the Lincoln
Highway Heritage Corridor. We traveled parts of the Westmoreland County, visiting
places such as the Big Mac Museum and Restaurant, Rick Kriss Antique Auto Restoration
Shop, DeLallo’s Italian Market Place (where Jan and I went shopping for an Italian
Family Night Dinner, great prices and food!)We stopped at the Summer Place for
lunch and went on to the Saint Vincent Grist Mill and Coffee Shop, and on to
the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve. The fifty-acre sanctuary for plants, wildlife
and research was established in memory of Arnold Palmer’s late wife Winnie.
From there we headed for the Darlington Train Station. We drove back to Leigonier
and visited the LHHC office and gift shop and walked around the town circle
until it was time for dinner at the Road Toad. It was there that we got to meet
with Dr. Kevin Patrick, author of “Diners of Pennsylvania”.
Sunday we were invited for a group breakfast at the Mountain View Inn where
Dr. Kevin Patrick enlightened us with his presentation on Diners of PA and the
Lincoln Highway. After breakfast we were invited to go see the 1938 O’Mahony
diner where it is being warehoused. In 2009, it will be carefully moved to the
Ligonier property and restored to museum quality. This was a donation to the
LHHC by the late John Heinz History Center of Pittsburgh. There are only four
others like it in the world! More information and pictures will be added to
our web-site.
Our next club event will be October 11th. The Thackeray’s are hosting the Covered
Bridge Tour in Bucks County, PA. More information is inside this newsletter.
Please remember to RSVP Jim & Karen Thackeray.
Our general meeting will be held October 19th at 5:00 p.m. in Bordentown. Mike
Berry, elections clerk, will hold the first round of nominations. So please
come out on Sunday, we will have coffee and refreshments.
